Maui Fair tickets available at discount
Maui Fair cashier Dancine Takahashi has announced that pre-sale tickets are available at reduced prices now through Sept. 27. The fair will be held Oct. 3-6.
Pre-sale adult tickets are $5 ($7 at the gate, except for Sunday, when they’re $5) and child tickets (5-11 years old) are $2 ($3 at the gate). Keiki 4 years old and younger are admitted free.
Pre-sale tickets are available at the Maui Fair administrative office in the parking lot of the War Memorial Gymnasium from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 242-2721 prior to visiting.
Tickets are also available at the Hawaii State Federal Credit Union, located in the Triangle Square, 425 Koloa St. #101B, in Kahului.

Hawaiian Islands Land Trust topic of talk
Scott Fisher, director of conservation with the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust, will discuss the group’s efforts to preserve the natural beauty of Hawaii during a presentation Monday at the regular meeting of the Kula AARP Chapter at the Kula Community Center.
Attendees will hear about the progress already made by the organization on Maui and other islands and what the future may hold.
The meeting will begin with refreshments at 9 a.m., followed by the business meeting at 9:30.
The event is open to the public. No reservations are necessary. Members and guests are encouraged to bring food for the Maui Food Bank.

Don Couch to speak at Rotary meeting
Maui County council member Don Couch will be the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Maui’s noon luncheon meeting Thursday in the Class Act Dining Room at the University of Hawaii Maui College. His talk will address home-based business legislation being reviewed by the Maui County Council.
Couch is a 22-year resident of Maui who has served the community in a variety of professional and volunteer positions. Prior to being elected to the council, he served the County of Maui as deputy planning director and as an executive assistant to Mayor Alan Arakawa, with a focus on issues affecting South and West Maui.

Shopping passes to benefit nonprofit
Macy’s will partner with Parents and Children Together to invite customers to participate in Macy’s eighth annual national “Shop For A Cause” charity shopping event on Saturday.
The one-day-only shopping event supports local charities’ fundraising efforts and has helped raised more than $46 million for charities across the country since 2006.
Macy’s shopping passes, which sell for $5 each, may be purchased from Parents and Children Together. The organization will keep 100 percent of every shopping pass it sells.
By purchasing a shopping pass from Parents and Children Together, customers help to support services for survivors of domestic violence while enjoying a day of discounts, entertainment and special events at Macy’s. Passholders will receive special discounts on most regular, sale and clearance purchases all day, but some exclusions apply.

Iao school plans open houses
Iao Intermediate School will hold open houses this week for different grade levels.
The 6th-grade event will be Tuesday, and the 7th- and 8th-grade open house will be Thursday.
The open houses will begin in the school’s dining center at 5:40 p.m., followed by classroom visitations. A special bell schedule will be passed out at the door.
Parents or guardians are encouraged to attend, to meet teachers and to understand what the curriculum and classroom expectations are.
The school advises, though, that the open house is not the time for parent-teacher conferences.
Parents or guardians are asked to bring a copy of their child’s schedule.
Those who pre-paid for dinner after registration day may pick up their tickets at the door starting at 4:40 p.m. Dinner service begins at 5 p.m.
Child care for those 5 to 9 years old will be available.

Significance of obon topic of talk
Lynn Araki-Regan will speak on the “Obon Festival’s Significance” during the noon luncheon meeting of the Rotary Club of Kahului on Monday at Cafe O’Lei at the Dunes at Maui Lani.
Araki-Regan is an attorney in private practice. Over the years, she has been involved with organizations including the Maui County Bar Association, Kiwanis, the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui, the Maui Humane Society and Maui Young Business Roundtable.

Hawaiian language topic of conference
Pupukahi I Holomua is a conference on Hawaiian language immersion education that will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the University of Hawaii Maui College in the student lounge at the Pilina building.
Students, families and teachers involved with the Kula Kaiapuni programs at Paia Elementary, Princess Nahi’ena’ena, Kalama Intermediate and King Kekaulike High schools, along with community members interested in Hawaiian immersion education, are invited to attend.

Habitat for Humanity Maui is seeking volunteers to join its volunteer exchange program at the Kihei Fourth Friday block party.
Several volunteer shifts are available from 3 to 10 p.m. The event itself is from 6 to 9 p.m.
The volunteer exchange program allows Habitat for Humanity Maui to share with the community about its organization, the many volunteer opportunities available, fundraising events and its homeownership process.

MECO Energy Fair happens Saturday
Maui Electric Co. will present electrical education, interactive displays, games and entertainment at its Maui Electric Energy Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center.
“Come visit our Maui Electric ohana to learn all about energy,” said Sharon Suzuki, president of Maui Electric. “It’s a fun way for the entire family to see how electricity works and understand the importance of electrical safety, energy conservation and ongoing clean energy efforts.”
This free annual community event will feature various live electrical and robotics demonstrations, an electric vehicle display and hands-on energy activities, games and giveaways.
Additional displays will also be presented by the Baldwin and Maui high schools robotics teams, the County of Maui Department of Water Supply, JUMPSmart Maui, Save Our Seabirds, First Wind and Sempra Energy.
