Project Vision gets underway

Vision testing and other health checkups will be offered as Project Vision’s 35-foot mobile clinic makes the rounds of Maui from today to April 18.

The screenings are free and open to the public. They are presented for the fourth straight year by the Lions Clubs of Maui, Project Vision Hawai’i and WE A Hui for Health.

There will be vision screenings to identify children’s eye disorders and early warning signs of cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, atrophy and diabetes for adults. Information and counseling will be available.

Besides vision testing, there will be blood-pressure and glucose screening and counseling on smoking cessation, safe tattooing, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder by the Community Alliance for Mental Health.

The Lions Club will offer hearing assessments at some of the sites.

In addition, there will be information on emergency preparedness and assistance starting MedQUEST and other health-insurance applications with help from the Hawai’i Health Connector.

Other groups available to offer information are Helping Hands Outreach (a nonprofit that connects people with services); the National Kidney Foundation; Queen’s Medical Center Women’s Health Center; Hawaii SHIP (Medicare assistance); Senior Medicare Patrol (Medicare anti-fraud); Maui County Office on Aging; ‘Ohana Health Plan; Hepatitis Support Network; and Legacy of Life Hawai’i (organ/tissue donations).

There also will be giveaways, such as reading glasses for adults, UV sunglasses for youngsters and ‘Ohana Health Plan tote bags.
