Film Festival to honor Farrell in Wailea tribute

2 min read

WAILEA Versatile Golden Globe winner Colin Farrell will accept the 2015 Maui Film Festival Navigator Award in a June 4 tribute at the festival’s Celestial Cinema at the Wailea Gold & Emerald Golf Course.

Festival founder and director Barry Rivers announced the award today, describing the 38-year-old Irish-born actor as “a cinematic force of nature. Colin Farrell is a chameleon who constantly creates one-of-a-kind characters that send pitch-perfect, pebble-to-boulder-sized ripples through whatever story his performance is helping to tell.”

Farrell co-starred with Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson in “Saving Mr. Banks,” the behind-the-scenes story of the classic Disney film “Mary Poppins,” which was featured at the Maui Film Festival’s FirstLight screenings in 2013. Other recent roles include starring with Jessica Chastain, another past Maui Film Festival honoree, in “Miss Julie,” directed by Liv Ulmann.

The festival reports that Farrell is currently shooting the second season of the HBO drama “True Detective” opposite Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughan and recently wrapped the independent film “The Lobster” starring opposite Rachel Weisz.

Farrell won the Golden Globe in 2009 playing a hit man on the lam in the dark comedy “In Bruges.” Also in 2009, he played a country music artist who actually sang his own songs in Jeff Bridges’ Oscar-winning “Crazy Heart.”

The Maui Film Festival Navigator Award “honors a film artist for carving a path of distinction through the turbulent waters of the entertainment industry without sacrificing their fundamental commitment to excellence.”

Farrell’s filmography encompasses epic heroes like the title role in Oliver Stone’s “Alexander” and Capt. John Smith in Terrence Malik’s “The New World”; romantic leads like the recent “Winter’s Tale”; lots of soldiers and cops; and dark comedies and thrillers with a psychological edges like “Horrible Bosses” or “Seven Psychopaths.”

Other titles include “Dead Man Down,” “Total Recall,” “The Way Back,” “London Boulevard,” “Fright Night,” “Ondine,” “Pride and Glory,” “Cassandra’s Dream,” “Miami Vice,” “Ask the Dust,” “The Recruit,” “A Home at the End of the World,” “Phone Booth,” “Minority Report,” “Daredevil,” “American Outlaws,” “SWAT,” “Intermission” and “Tigerland.”

Farrell is the first luminary to be announced for tributes at the 16th annual festival, returning to Wailea and the Maui Arts & Cultural Center June 3 to 7. Other announcements will be made leading up to opening night. For information about passes and tickets, available at discount prices through May 4, visit www.mauifilmfestival.com.
