747 lands at Kahului
A 747-400 with insignia from Dubai landed at Kahului Airport on Wednesday evening, Maui District Airports Manager Marvin Moniz said.
The chartered flight from New York arrived at 6 p.m., carrying 30 people who were picked up by 10 vehicles near the airport firefighting training area and not at the airport's main terminal, Moniz said. The vehicles, arranged by ground-handling company Landmark Aviation, included cars, vans and sport utility vehicles.
An aircraft the size of a 747-400 rarely lands at Kahului, but "we get them every now and then," he said.
The big jet can't take off from Kahului's 7,000-foot main runway fully loaded, so it will need to fly to airports with longer runways, such as the Honolulu or Kona airports, to top off fuel before flying overseas, he said.
