Na Mele O Maui honors keiki song and art
Kamehameha Schools Maui high school captured top honors as the overall and Hawaiian language winners at the Na Mele O Maui 2015 Song Competition held Tuesday at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
In the art competition of Na Mele, Gunnar Turnball of Baldwin High captured best of show and first place in the three-dimensional artwork division for “Burgeon” made of ohia.
Oriana Buika took first place in the two-dimensional artwork category for her acrylic paint on wood, titled “Ephemeral Allure, Lasting Sentiment.”
Turnball and Buika each won $100. Their teacher is Janet Sato.
The Kamehameha Schools Maui high school group sang the competition number, “Ka Lehua ‘Ula,” and their song choice, “Waika.” Their teachers were Dale Nitta and Kalei ‘A’arona-Lorenzo.
Kindergarteners to high school seniors from public and private Maui schools competed in the contest. Each class was required to perform two songs in Hawaiian, the contest song, which differed by age division, and a song of choice.
Classes were judged on musical competence, language proficiency and interpretation, stage presence and all-around enthusiasm. The judges were Reiko Fukino, music judge; Pomaika’i Krueger, language judge; and Hokulani Holt, overall judge.
Winners were determined by the combination of their scores in the contest and choice songs.
“It was beautiful to hear the language of our kupuna being sung by the next generation,” said Krueger.
Fukino said she was surprised by the strong performances and improvement in the kindergarten-1st grade division competitors.
