Tegarden to hold fundraiser today
Deidre Tegarden, a Democratic candidate for the state House’s District 11 (South Maui) seat, will host a campaign fundraiser at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Kihei from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
The event will feature food, entertainment and live music.
There is a suggested donation of $20 per person.
The VFW Hall is located at 2110 Uluniu Road.

Greig-Nakasone to present high fashion candidate fundraiser on Friday in Wailuku
Maui County Council candidate Napua Greig-Nakasone will host a high-fashion campaign fundraiser Friday at the King Kamehameha Golf Club clubhouse.
The spring collection of Manaola, a “new cultural conscious designer,” will be featured during the event that will include heavy pupu and shopping. Tickets cost $125, or $200 for VIPs.

Sugimura fundraiser set for Feb. 23
Maui County Council candidate Yuki Lei Sugimura is holding a campaign fundraiser from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Yokouchi Estate in Wailuku.
Sugimura is running for the Upcountry residency seat being vacated by Gladys Baisa due to term limits.
The evening will include food by chefs Travis Morrin, Jaron Blosser and Cody Christopher of Three’s Bar and Grill, and music by Nevah Too Late.

Nikhilananda seeks state House seat
Longtime community activist Nick Nikhilananda has announced that he will seek the state House of Representatives District 13 seat, which includes East Maui, Molokai and Lanai.
Nikhilananda, a Huelo resident, is running as a Green Party of Hawaii candidate.
He has lived in the district for most of the past 28 years and has served on the Mayor’s Task Force on Higher Education and the Maui County Board of Variances and Appeals. He also served on the board of directors of Akaku: Maui Community Television and is a past president of the Haiku Community Association. For over nine years, he was the producer and host of “Maui Talks-TV,” a live public affairs call-in talk show on Akaku.
Nikhilananda is a trained family and conflict-resolution mediator with Mediation Services of Maui. He worked as a teacher in the public school system and for many years was the mathematics teacher at the Maui site of the Hawaii Job Corps.
He is a Hawaii delegate and serves on the National Committee of the Green Party of the United States.

Maui Peace Action endorses Sanders
Maui Peace Action, a citizens’ group that has pushed education for peace and justice since 2003 on Maui, announced its endorsement of Sen. Bernie Sanders for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Hawaii does not have a presidential primary, but people wishing to cast a vote in the Maui County Democratic Party’s presidential preference caucus March 26 should go to hawaiidemocrats.org/join/, where information on the locations and times of precinct caucuses will be posted.

Couch to hold fundraiser Feb. 17
A “Sunset on the Beach Party with Don Couch” fundraiser will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Sugar Beach Events Center.
There will be live music and gourmet food stations while watching the sunset from the beach, the Don Couch Campaign Committee said.
Couch holds the County Council’s South Maui residency seat. The gathering will be an opportunity to speak to Couch and to discuss council actions and other issues.
