Plantation life focus of festival on July 23
Queen Ka’ahumanu Center will hold its inaugural Plantation Festival from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on July 23.
The event will consist of cultural booths that will include educational elements and an ethnic menu. Ongoing cultural entertainment includes a festival fashion show featuring traditional and contemporary cultural designs. A plantation history walk will display historical facts and photos, and for the keiki, an art contest and interactive plantation games are scheduled.
Guests will also have the opportunity to participate to win prizes with the Plantation Passport, a guide through the many cultural booths. Passports must be stamped by each cultural organization in order to be eligible for center discount coupons and an opportunity to win the grand prize Las Vegas vacation giveaway.
Cultural community organizations have contributed to the components of the event and have been meeting since earlier this year.
A Hui Hou Fund Steering Committee will be selling “Honor our Past. Grow our Future” merchandise in support of displaced Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. plantation workers.
The Plantation Festival is sponsored in part by the County of Maui, HC&S and Queen Ka’ahumanu Center.
