Area to be closed for animal control
Portions of the Kanaio Natural Area Reserve will be closed on dates in August and September while the state Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry and Wildlife conducts animal control via aerial shooting from helicopters.
The closures are scheduled for Aug. 3 and 4 and Sept. 7 and 8.
Aerial shooting is required to control animal populations including feral goats, deer and pigs in the area for the conservation of threatened and endangered species, native ecosystems and watersheds.
Copies of the map illustrating the area subject to aerial shooting are available for inspection at the Division of Forestry and Wildlife District Office, 1955 Main St., Room 301 in Wailuku.
