A 90th birthday tribute to former U.S. Poet Laureate W.S. Merwin, which will include poet Edward Hirsch and Merwin’s longtime editor Michael Wiegers, will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s McCoy Theater.

The Merwin Conservancy is presenting the tribute to Merwin, a 40-year Peahi resident, as part of The Green Room, an environmental and literary salon series.

“W.S. Merwin’s meaningful, positive impact on the world, both locally here on Maui and globally through his poetry, is undeniable. We are excited to honor and pay tribute to him on the occasion of his 90th birthday,” said The Merwin Conservancy Executive Director Jason Denhart. “To make it truly memorable, we are absolutely thrilled to welcome renowned poet Edward Hirsch and Michael Wiegers, whose support of Mr. Merwin’s poetic works and of his vision for the conservancy has been unwavering.”

The evening will feature a conversation with Hirsch of the Guggenheim Foundation and Wiegers of Copper Canyon Press and other guests, the news release about the event said.

Hirsch has received a MacArthur Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Ingram Merrill Foundation Award, a Pablo Neruda Presidential Medal of Honor, the Prix de Rome and an Academy of Arts and Letters Award. In 2008, he was elected a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.

His books of poems include “The Night Parade,” “Earthly Measures” and “The Living Fire: New and Selected Poems” and his prose books, “A Poet’s Glossary,” “Poet’s Choice” and “How to Read a Poem and Fall in Love with Poetry.”

Tickets are $25 per person with a $10 student rate with valid student I.D. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds benefit the conservancy.

The presentation will be followed by a courtyard reception with dessert, champagne and live musical entertainment. This event is presented by FIM Group.

The next day will be W.S. Merwin Day in Hawaii as proclaimed by Gov. David Ige.

Merwin, born in New York City in 1927, was the U.S. poet laureate in 1999 and 2010 and a Pulitzer Prize winner for poetry in 1971 and 2009. His most recent works are “Garden Time,” “The Moon Before Morning” and “The Shadow of Sirius.”

He co-founded The Merwin Conservancy in 1983 with his late wife, Paula, to preserve the legacy of the poet and translator, his home and his palm forest as a retreat and study for writers and for environmental advocacy and community education.
