Kiwanis will host compost maker
The Kiwanis Club of Maui will host Rubens Fonseca, plant manager of Maui EKO Systems, at its noon meeting Thursday at Tante's Island Cuisine at the Maui Seaside Hotel in Kahului. Lunch is from the menu.

AARP hosts 'Think of Your Future'
AARP Hawaii will present a free "Think of Your Future" workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in Rooms 101 and 102 of the Kaunoa Senior Center in Spreckelsville, 401 Alakapa Place.
No individual advice will be given and no products or services will be promoted or sold, according to an announcement.
The workshop will include the 10 steps to get ready for retirement, an overview of Social Security retiree benefits, and an introduction to Medicare.

Christmas Child event set at school
Volunteers from Maui's Operation Christmas Child invite the community to a "Praise in the Islands" event from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Lihikai Elementary School in Kahului.
In addition to food and fellowship, volunteers plan to pack shoeboxes with toys, school supplies and hygiene items for children affected by war, disease, disaster, poverty and famine.
Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan's Purse, an international relief and evangelism organization.

Conservation interns sought
Na Hua Ho'ohuli i ka Pono is recruiting for its 2017-18 conservation leaders internship program, which entails 19 hours a week from Oct. 2 to May 11.
One position each is available with the Maui Invasive Species Committee, Maui Nui Botanical Gardens and Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project. College-level students on the island of Maui who are interested in careers in natural resources management and protection and invasive species management are encouraged to apply. Applications and all required documents must be received by 11:59 p.m. Friday.

Maui Health System topic of discussion
Members of the executive team of Maui Health System and Kula Hospital will be the guest speakers at the 8 a.m. meeting of the Rotary Club of Upcountry Maui on Friday at Casanova Italian Restaurant & Deli in Makawao. The discussion will dive into the new management of Maui's hospitals -- what's changed and what hasn't. A brief question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

Author will sign 'Voices of Aloha'
Norm Bezane will sign copies of his book "Voices of Aloha on Magical Maui" from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Barnes & Nobel in Lahaina.
The award-winning author's fourth book includes the best of 60 short tales from his column in the Lahaina News.
The book is divided into sections on monarchs, missionaries, musicians and artists, colorful characters, makers of modern Maui and those who shape the visitor experience.
"This is the only book on the contemporary people of Maui and what today's Hawaiians think about the loss of their kingdom and their views on what has happened to the island in the last 50 years," Bezane said.

Discount Sunday for helicopter tours
