A 58-year-old man from Alberta, Canada, apparently drowned off Honolua Bay on the west side Wednesday afternoon, fire officials said.
Firefighters received a call at 2:18 p.m. from someone yelling for assistance in the water, said Fire Services Chief Ed Taomoto.
The visitor was snorkeling with family about 100 yards from the boat ramp in the bay when he got in trouble when water got in his mask, said Taomoto. He eventually became unresponsive.
The man was brought to shore at the nearest point in the bay but was faraway from the ramp and the road, Taomoto said. A dinghy from a sailboat in the bay transported the man to the boat ramp.
Bystanders began CPR, which lifeguards continued when they arrived at 2:28 p.m.
He could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at the scene, Taomoto said.
The ocean safety crew from D.T. Fleming Beach, a Lahaina fire crew and paramedics responded to the call, he said.
