The Plantation House on Makawao Avenue in Pukalani is a blend of home and business mostly for part-time residents or for visitors who want to do some work while on vacation.
“SPACESMaui is indeed intended for travelers, but everyone else, too,” said Julius Geis, who owns the business with his wife, Jaz. “I wouldn’t say that our guests who come from afar can’t leave their work behind. Instead, they, at some point, made a conscious decision that work should not hold them back from experiencing new things and traveling the world. So we provide them with the perfect work environment and exceptional guest service.”
SPACESMaui had a soft opening in July. After interior renovation work in November and December, the business officially opened in January, Geis said.
Available Monday through Friday, the rentable office space — in “Jump Seat,” private office, meeting room formats — is at 37 Makawao Ave., near Pukalani Superette.
The 1,600-square-foot, air-conditioned home with space leased by the day or week, starting at $30 a day, provides customers with office space needs without the overhead of buying or leasing an office or the hassle of working with Wi-Fi provided at a coffee shop or cafe, according to an announcement from SPACESMaui.
There’s 240 square feet of office space with two “jump seats” and a permanent desk; 100- and 150-square-foot conference room areas; a 100-square-foot private office; and a 250-square-foot kitchen and library lounge. Other areas in the home include a restroom and an information technology area.
The larger meeting room has a wireless, wall-mounted monitor for presentations.
A “Jump Seat Pass” includes a desk chair, workspace, desk lamp, fast and stable Wi-Fi, one cup of coffee with each day pass, water and access to a “muse meditation device” and library lounge. Also available are an office printer, copy machine and scanner. Customers also have the option to rent Mac computer accessories such as a monitor, mouse or keyboard for an additional fee.
SPACESMaui is part of the Proximity Networking of CoWorking Spaces, a network with more than 100 co-working spaces around the world.
At present, the Pukalani office space is the only Proximity CoWorking space in Hawaii, Geis said.
“There are, of course, other co-working spaces on the Hawaiian Islands, but they are not part of that specific network,” he said.
He added that a “great benefit” for Proximity members and guests is that they can access other co-working spaces in the same network with one user account.
Monthly members get a travel allowance that they can redeem with any of number of network partners, and they can use other proximity spaces for free, Geis said.
“To us, proximity is a true step up for the concept of co-working,” he said.
When asked why he chose Pukalani for his co-working space business, Geis said he and his wife moved to Maui from Germany and were looking for office space on the island.
His father-in-law, Leil Koch, had space available at his real estate company, Equity One Real Estate Inc., in Pukalani, Geis said.
“In the past, I had always worked from co-working spaces, and Jaz and I dreamed about opening our own for a long time,” he said. “So when we saw the available space, our dreams immediately became more of a reality.”
