A vehicle that struck and sheered a utility pole along South Papa Avenue early Tuesday morning caused 1,495 Maui Electric Co. customers in Kahului to lose power, the utility said.
The crash occurred at 2:23 a.m. and power was restored to most customers by 3:46 a.m., MECO spokeswoman Shayna Decker said. However, Lihikai Elementary School and 48 other customers near the crash site had full power restoration delayed because of their close proximity to the crash.
Lihikai school was without power until 11 a.m., she said. The 48 residential customers had their power taken down at 6:58 a.m. and restored at 10:03 a.m.
Published reports indicated that Lihikai school was closed Tuesday and was scheduled to reopen today.
