Maui Math Circle names May 12 contest winners
The final school-year session of the Maui Match Circle was held on May 12 and consisted of competition.
Winners are:
3rd Grade
First Place, Capri Nozaki, Pu’u Kukui Elementary; Second Place, Violet Kato, Wailuku Elementary; Third Place, Jett Werner, home-schooled.
4th Grade
First Place, Huy Vu, Wailuku Elementary; Second Place, Ayden Truong, Pu’u Kukui Elementary; Third Place, Rexford Ang, Kamali’i Elementary.
5th Grade
First Place, Braeden James Asuncion, Pomaika’i Elementary; Second Place, Sophia Kato, Wailuku Elementary; Third Place, Alex Minnihan, Pomaika’i Elementary.
Maui Math Circle is a student-run community service program where middle and high school students teach advanced math concepts and problem-solving skills to elementary school students in grades 3, 4 and 5 from public, private and home schools throughout Maui County. The program consisted of five sessions held at Pomaika’i Elementary School throughout the school year. Pomaika’i Principal Kim Otani was in attendance May 12.
Kaitlyn Takeno served as Maui Math Circle director. There are about 30 middle and high school volunteers from Iao Intermediate, Maui Waena Intermediate, Maui High School, Baldwin High School and Seabury Hall.
The program is sponsored by Pomaika’i Elementary School and Maui Economic Development Board and serves more than 120 elementary school students.
