A close look at pond life

Tipper Simmons and son Skyler Simmons of Makawao use a microscope inside the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge’s Visitor Center in Kihei to learn about some of the smaller creatures that inhabit the wetland. “We’re just outdoorsy,” Tipper Simmons said. “We get excited by the outdoors and the environment.” The visitor center is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday to Friday. At the center, visitors can check out binoculars to take to the pond and watch native birds and feathered visitors who fly in from around the globe. The refuge also boasts a newly constructed bird-watching stand near the center that is open to the public.
