Ready for Valentine’s Day

First photo: University of Hawaii Maui College Chef Instructor Hannah Stanchfield assembles heart-shaped fresh fruit tarts in the Pa’ina Building Wednesday morning. The tarts were headed to the display case of Sugar Cubed, a Valentine’s Day pop-up pastry shop at the college’s food court. Staff and students were churning out a variety of items for the fundraiser for the school Culinary Arts Program, including chocolate bonbons, chocolate love letters and hearts of tiramisu with strawberry balsamic glaze. Today is the pop-up’s final day. It is scheduled to be open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., but Culinary Arts Program Coordinator Teresa Shurilla said she planned to keep slinging Valentine’s Day goodies as long as customers were there to buy them. “If they’re banging down the door, we’ll stay open,” she said.
