Visitors injured at Olivine Pools

Two visitors were nearly pulled into the ocean by waves at Olivine Pools on the northwest coast of Maui and had to be helped up a steep trail to safety by firefighters Thursday, Maui fire officials said.

At about noon, firefighters responded to a call of two people unable to make their way back up a trail from the shoreline at Olivine Pools near Kahakuloa.

Witnesses told firefighters when they arrived that a couple apparently had been swimming in one of the pools when a large wave nearly pulled them into the ocean, Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said. Another wave washed the couple back onto the rugged shoreline.

Both were able to make it to dry land but were unable to traverse the steep and slippery trail leading to Kahekili Highway, he said. Firefighters assisted the 24-year-old woman and 36-year-old man up the trail.

They suffered multiple cuts and scrapes. The woman was transported by medics to Maui Memorial Medical Center in good condition. The man declined medical treatment.

Firefighters from Napili and Lahaina responded to the call.
