All that glitters at the Imua masquerade ball

More than 500 people attended Imua Ball 2019 Carnival de Venice Mascheranda benefit Saturday in the Monarchy Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa. The sold-out event was a benefit for the nonprofit organization that provides services for young children with developmental difficulties and support for their families. The Makana Aloha Foundation announced the donation of a $30,000 grant to Imua. Makana is the family foundation of Gunars Valkirs, CEO of Maui Ku’ia Estate Chocolate Inc. and honorary chair with wife, JoRene, of this year’s gala. In addition, he announced an annual grant to Imua starting in 2020 from the soon-to-open chocolate company. This year’s gala fundraiser presented the “Legacy Commitment Award” to Brian Kakihara, senior vice president and regional manager of First Hawaiian Bank; the “Outstanding Community Partner” award to First Hawaiian Bank; and the “Pediatrician of the Year” award to Dr. Felicitas Livaudais. Hermine Harman won the “Best Costume” award.
