Man, 65, identified in deadly Kaanapali water incident

A 65-year-old male died Saturday after going for a swim about 60 yards from shore fronting Kaanapali Shores when witnesses said he was “pulled under possibly due to a shark attack,” according to police.

The victim was identified late Saturday as Thomas Smiley, a California resident vacationing on Maui, Lt. Gregg Okamoto said.

Fire received the alarm at 8:48 a.m. First responders tried to revive him but he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

However, lifeguards and state Department of Land and Natural Resources searched waters and could not locate a shark, and the incident is being classified as a “fatal miscellaneous accident,” police said.

The ocean had clear visibility, with flat to 1-foot-high surf and 5-8 mph winds, at the time of the incident, according to the fire report.
