Hot weather expected to break Thursday as another record set

Temperatures on Maui are expected to simmer down by the end of the week, a National Weather Service meteorologist said Tuesday.
“It feels a lot warmer because we aren’t getting the normal trade winds,” said Melissa Dye, meteorologist for the weather service. “We are looking at a return to trades sometime Thursday, Friday of this week.”
Since May 18, Maui has recorded temperatures above 90 degrees, Dye said. On May 22, the thermometer at Kahului Airport topped off at 96 degrees, a record for the date and the month of May, and just short of the all-time high temperature of 97 degrees set on Aug. 31, 1994, and equaled on Aug. 22, 2015.
The record summer heat extended through the weekend, with temperatures at Kahului Airport reaching 93 degrees on Saturday, which broke the previous record of 91 set in 1996. Sunday’s high temperature was 91 degrees, which was one degree short of equaling the record set in 1953, but temperatures on Memorial Day rose back up to 93 degrees, which broke the 1980 record of 91 degrees.
The high temperature at Kahului Airport of 95 degrees Tuesday also was a record. It broke the old mark of 93 degrees set in 1953.
Dye said that this month’s record-setting heat streak was due to elevated surface temperatures and southeast gusts that pushed warm air “up over the island chain.”
She added that it is difficult to tell when a similar extended period of record hot days like these last occurred. However, it’s been more than two decades since there were multiple days in a row of record-high temperatures, she said.
The weather through Saturday is expected to be mostly sunny with some scattered showers and temperatures capped at 90 degrees, according to the weather service. Winds from the northeast are expected to range from 8 to 14 mph and then increase through the weekend to 21 mph.
