Maui Film Festival to honor Maya Erskine

Maya Erskine’s latest film, “Plus One,” recently received the Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival.

WAILEA — Add another star and another premiere to the Maui Film Festival at Wailea’s lineup for its 20th anniversary season.

Movie and TV actress and writer Maya Erskine will accept the 2019 Maui Film Festival Rising Star Award June 14 at the festival Celestial Cinema on the Wailea Gold and Emerald Golf Course, festival founder and director Barry Rivers announced today.

Her tribute will be followed later that evening by the Hawaii premiere screening of “Plus One,” in which she co-stars with Jack Quaid as two friends who agree to be each other’s “plus one” guests over a busy summer of their friends’ weddings.

“Each year the Maui Film Festival makes a great effort to scan the constellation of cinema stardom to find talent in the ascendancy of their careers with an exceptional passion and drive to soar. This year, we are thrilled to honor Maya Erskine,” said Rivers. “In a testament to her immense audience appeal, Maya’s latest film, ‘Plus One,’ recently received the Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival. She is one to watch, and we are thrilled to share both the film and Maya with our Maui audience.”

The award “honors a young film artist whose every role, even in his or her formative years, surprises, enthralls and delights audiences of every age.”

Previous honorees include Scott Eastwood, Karen Gillan, Garrett Hedlund, Brie Larson, Nick Robinson and Wyatt Russell.

Although early in her career, Erskine has won critical acclaim as the co-creator and co-star of the comedy TV series “PEN15,” about the awkwardness of the middle-school years, as seen through the eyes of two 7th graders.

The Los Angeles native studied theater at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts before going on to the NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Her other feature credits include co-starring with Seth Rogen in the upcoming comedy “American Pickle”; co-starring in the Netflix original “Wine Country,” starring and directed by Amy Poehler; and being featured in the dark drama “6 Balloons.” Her TV work includes regular roles on NBC’s “Heartbeat” and FXX’s “Man Seeking Woman” and recurring roles on “Casual” and “Insecure.”

Ironically, her “Plus One” co-star Jack Quaid is the son of actor Dennis Quaid, who was a 2008 honoree at the Maui Film Festival at Wailea.

The 2019 Maui Film Festival will run June 12-16 at the Wailea Resort and the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. For more details, tickets and passes, visit www.mauifilmfestival.com.
