Stringing lei for Memorial Day

The annual event presented by Kaunoa Senior Services and Office of Mayor called on volunteer lei-makers to string enough lei to place at least one on every grave at Maui Veterans Cemetery for today's Memorial Day Service. Kaunoa Retired & Senior Volunteer Program Director Dana Acosta said she expected the crew of up to 350 volunteers to make 2,900 lei. "Some folks were here before 7 o'clock," Acosta said. "It's really important for them to come out and pay tribute to the veterans. The cool thing is how the community comes together. It's not just seniors." Today's Memorial Day program is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. at the Maui Veterans Cemetery in Makawao.
