AAA Hawaii will be offering its Tipsy Tow service as a last resort for any driver who is impaired from partying during the Fourth of July holiday.
From 6 p.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Friday, motorists, bartenders, restaurant managers, party hosts or passengers of a drunken driver may call AAA operators at (800) 222-4357 for a free one-way, one-time tow and ride home of up to 5 miles.
A regular AAA Hawaii-contracted roadside assistance service truck will arrive. The destination is limited to the rider's residence and the usual AAA Hawaii pay rate will be charged if the ride exceeds 5 miles. Tipsy Tow excludes passengers. Reservations are not accepted.
Tipsy Tow is an attempt to provide a last resort option instead of driving while intoxicated or being a passenger to an intoxicated driver.
"We want motorists to be aware of the high crash risk from drinking and driving associated with the holiday," said AAA Hawaii General Manager Liane Sumida. "We encourage drivers to designate a sober driver instead of getting behind the wheel if they have been drinking."
AAA Hawaii offers tips for those celebrating the holiday:
• Plan ahead to designate a sober driver for any social events or parties.
• Never serve alcohol to those under age 21.
• Never ride as a passenger in a car driven by someone who was drinking alcohol or using drugs.
• Call a friend or family member for a ride home if intoxicated.
• If the driver is intoxicated, offer nonalcoholic beverages as a party host, provide overnight accommodations to guests who have been drinking, and take away the car keys from friends or relatives who have been drinking.
