Somos Ohana Nicaragua, a local nonprofit that builds schools and brings physical therapy services and scholarships to northwestern Nicaragua, will be holding a fundraiser at The Flatbread Co. in Paia on Tuesday.
The pizza night fundraiser includes a silent auction from 5 to 9 p.m., and a portion of the money from every pizza sold at the restaurant between 5 and 10 p.m. will be donated to Somos Ohana Nicaragua. The funds will help furnish the third wing of the most recent secondary school that the nonprofit has constructed.
Charlotte Flavin, the nonprofit's president, explained that the wing for Instituto Augusto Cesar Sandino will include a kitchen where students and teachers can prepare lunches from the vegetables they've grown in their school garden.
Volunteers of the Pukalani-based nonprofit are preparing for their 20th consecutive summer of working with the people of small villages in the municipality of Villanueva in the Department of Chinandega. The group offers free weekly Spanish classes in Pukalani for potential volunteers, who must pay their own travel fees and a modest daily fee to the families they board with.
