The Office of Hawaiian Affairs announced that two Maui County community events will receive a share of $100,000 from its Ahahui Grant Program.
A total of 22 events statewide were selected as the grant program's first round of awardees for fiscal year 2020, which runs from July 1 to June 30, 2020. These events will occur between July 1 and Dec. 31.
"OHA is excited to partner with these community events that will provide important opportunities to promote health, education, culture and land-based activities across the state for our lahui and the broader public," said Kamanaopono Crabbe, OHA chief executive officer and ka pouhana.
Hui No Ke Ola Pono was granted $6,000 for its second annual Aha Mauliola, a Native Hawaiian Wellness Gathering. The event's goal is to educate the community on health and wellness resources, as well as to strengthen the identity of Native Hawaiians by preserving, practicing and perpetuating the culture.
Na Mamo o Muolea received $7,000 to continue to celebrate limu, educate the community on the marine ecosystem and the Native Hawaiian culture and diet and promote makai-related management. These lessons can be shared at its Hana Limu Festival.
