A 23-year-old Kula woman was arrested after crashing her Subaru Forester head on into a Honda Civic, killing the Civic’s 19-year-old passenger and sending the driver, also 19, to the hospital.

Police said the 2016 Subaru Forester was traveling toward Lahaina on Kuihelani Highway in the wrong lane of travel when it collided head on with the 2003 Honda Civic, which was traveling in the same lane toward Kahului. The collision occurred about three miles north of Honoapiilani Highway.

The female passenger in the Honda sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene, police said. She was identified as Hannah Brown of Wailuku. The driver of the Honda, a male from Kahului, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The driver of the Subaru did not sustain any injuries.

Police said preliminary investigation revealed that alcohol was a factor in the crash. The Subaru driver was arrested for first-degree negligent homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of liquor. She remained in police custody while officers continued their investigation.

The roadway was closed for about five hours while police investigated the crash.

Police emphasized that fatal crashes “are very complex investigations” to determine any and all factors that may have contributed to the crash. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be sent to the Prosecutor’s Office for review.

This is Maui County’s 11th traffic fatality of the year, compared to four at the same time last year.
