A 40-year-old man was arrested for arson after a brush fire behind Walmart on Wednesday that witnesses said was intentionally set.
The fire, which was reported at 1:17 p.m., burned 5 acres of brush near the intersection of Hana Highway and Airport Access Road. Crews had fully contained the fire by 4:45 p.m. but continued to mop up and extinguish hot spots.
Homeless witnesses in the area claimed a man had intentionally set the fire, police spokesman Lt. Gregg Okamoto said Thursday. The male suspect was found nearby and arrested for second-degree arson. He was released pending further investigation.
The cause of the fire is undetermined and the investigation is ongoing, Okamoto said. No injuries were reported.
