Man rescued after jumping into pond

Two Maui residents were rescued by the Maui Fire Department’s Air One helicopter Saturday evening after a man suffered injuries to both legs after attempting to jump into a pond from approximately 60 feet in the Makamakaole Gulch area in Waihee, fire officials said.

A 21-year-old Kahului man suffered injuries that were not life-threatening to both of his lower legs and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center. The other person rescued was not hurt and was supporting the victim, fire officials said.

The incident occurred around 6:02 p.m. Saturday as six Maui residents were jumping and swimming in a pond, which was approximately a 15- to 20-minute hike from the roadway, officials said.

The incident commander determined that the conditions were unsafe to attempt a rescue on foot, but crews were able to safely complete air operations prior to nightfall, fire officials said. The operation ended at 7:54 p.m.

Engine 1 from Wailuku, Rescue 10 out of Kahului, along with the Medic 10 ambulance, all responded to the incident.
