The University of Hawaii Maui College will begin offering a new science lab technician certificate program this fall that will equip students to collect, analyze and interpret environmental and water quality data.
The four-credit certificate program takes one year to complete and is offered as part of a U.S. Department of Agriculture water quality education grant.
As critical water issues on Maui County continue to escalate, UH-MC faculty member Andrea Kealoha said that the workforce demand for lab technicians with expertise in environmental and water quality testing in Hawaii is projected to increase by 36 percent by 2025.
The program will offer $300 for completing the first course in the fall (SCI 190V) and then another $700 for finishing the last two spring classes. In total, students will receive $1,000 for completing the four-credit certificate. The deadline to apply for the fall course is Aug. 1.
