UPDATE 10:40 p.m.: Part of Honoapiilani Highway still closed as fire clings “dangerously close” to road

A portion of Honoapiilani Highway in Waikapu was closed indefinitely as of 10:40 p.m. Sunday night as a nearby brush fire clung “dangerously close to the southbound lane of the highway,” the Maui Fire Department reported.

Police had the highway closed from the Maui Tropical Plantation to Kuihelani Highway, but on Monday morning, officers planned to allow only local traffic access to Honoapiilani from the intersection of Waiko Road to the tropical plantation.

Other traffic, including Monday morning commuter traffic, will be detoured to Waiko Road and Kuihelani Highway, the county said. The portion of Honoapiilani Highway from Waiko Road to Wailuku will remain open.

“As of 10:30 p.m. Sunday, the fire was too close to southbound traffic on Honoapiilani Highway to reopen it safely,” Mayor Michael Victorino said. “Out of an abundance of caution, the highway will remain closed to allow firefighters to do their work. The public’s continued patience is much appreciated.”

Containment of the three brush fires was the same as of 10:40 p.m.

The 80-acre fire in Kihei, which was reported at 3:46 p.m. mauka of Lipoa Parkway and Maui Brewing Co., was 20 percent contained. The 10-acre fire in Waikapu, which was reported at 4:41 p.m. on the mauka side of the intersection of Honoapiilani Highway and the Kahili Golf Course, was 80 percent contained. The 5-acre fire that was reported at 4:48 p.m. off of Waiko Road and the Apana scrap yard was 100 percent contained.

No injuries have been reported, and no structures were immediately threatened. The county had not ordered any evacuations as of Sunday night.
