In a demonstration of solidarity with kia'i, or protectors, a public march in "support of the protection of Mauna Kea" will be held Saturday morning in Kahului.
Kapu Aloha Unity March participants, who are encouraged to wear red, bring Hawaii flags and signs, will gather at War Memorial Stadium at 8:30 a.m.
Following pule and oli, demonstrators will walk from the stadium along Kanaloa and Kaahumanu avenues to the University of Hawaii Maui College campus, where a brief program will be held, featuring speaker Kaho'okahi Kanuha, who has led the protests against the building of a telescope atop Mauna Kea.
Other speakers include Tiare Lawrence, Kaleikoa Ka'eo, Kahele Dukelow and Ke'eaumoku Kapu. Music by the Sons of Yeshua, known for their music about the protection of Mauna Kea, will greet marchers on campus.
Shuttle service to the stadium from UH-MC will be provided by Akina transportation, beginning at 7 a.m.; the last shuttle is scheduled for 8:15 a.m.
"This is a unifying time for Maui, all are welcome in Kapu Aloha to gather and walk together to show our solidarity with kia'i, protectors of the mauna," said Kapu Aloha Unity March organizers Mahina Martin, Luana Kawa'a, Koa Hewahewa and Torie H'opi'i.
"The march highlights kapu aloha in recognition of the higher standards kia'i are committed to in their efforts to protect Mauna Kea," the group said. "Marchers are asked to reflect that as well through their peaceful and respectful participation."
The march and program is a smoke-, drug- and alcohol-free event.
