Waikapu woman killed in car crash

A 24-year-old Waikapu woman died after her car veered off the road and crashed into a tree in Ukumehame on Saturday afternoon, according to police.

At 4:43 p.m. Saturday, a maroon 2008 Honda Accord was traveling east toward Wailuku on Honoapiilani Highway, police said. The Honda was passing left of center, traveling east in the westbound lanes, when it veered further left and collided into a white 2018 Nissan Sentra, which pulled off the road and was within the westbound shoulder. The Honda continued in the same direction into the dirt, where it collided into a tree and subsequently rolled over.

The collision occurred 82 feet east of Ukumehame Firing Range Road and 0.3 miles east of Mile Marker 12 in Lahaina.

The Honda driver was identified as 24-year-old Aliya Hue Sing of Waikapu. Hue Sing sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and died after being transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

None of the parties in the Nissan suffered injuries.

Hue Sing was wearing her seat belt properly, according to police. The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol has not been determined, as the investigation is still pending.

The incident is Maui County’s 15th traffic fatality, as compared to 11 at the same time last year.
