Woman hurts ankle on Kahakapao Trail
A Maui woman who injured her ankle was carried off the Kahakapao Trail on Saturday, according to the Maui Fire Department.
At 11:29 a.m., crews received a call about a 44-year-old woman who had rolled her ankle while hiking along the trail. An Engine 5 crew from Makawao arrived on scene and walked up the east side of the trail with a first-aid kit and a stokes basket. Halfway up the trail, the crew found the woman lying on her back with her foot elevated on a fallen tree trunk. She was alert, oriented and complaining of a sprain or possible fractured left ankle. The woman said she’d been walking when she somehow twisted her ankle and heard and felt a pop. Her husband had already placed two ice packs on both sides of the ankle and wrapped it with an Ace bandage.
A Rescue 10 crew from Kahului arrived on scene to help carry out the woman in a stokes basket until the trail was wide enough to use a Fire Department ATV “mule.” The woman was then delivered to medics in the parking lot and taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room.
