The Maui News

A man was arrested after a police officer helped him push a stolen truck off the road when it broke down on Kaahumanu Avenue in Kahului early Wednesday, according to police.

Chivalry Asuncion Kalilikane, 35, of Wailuku was charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, habitual property crime and second-degree theft. His bail was set at $15,000.

A police officer saw the green 2004 Nissan Titan pickup truck stalled in the westbound outer lane of Kaahumanu Avenue at 2:46 a.m. Wednesday and helped Asuncion Kalilikane push the truck into the nearby Maui Beach Hotel parking lot, police said.

Police later confirmed the vehicle was stolen, and officers saw several items in the truck that were suspected to be stolen. The stolen property, including tools, tool buckets and a welding jacket and hood valued at $1,720, had been taken from a pallet in the bed of a flatbed pickup truck that was in the hotel parking lot, according to police.

Asuncion Kalilikane reported he had driven the stolen pickup to the hotel parking lot, where he took property from the flatbed and loaded it into the stolen truck, police said. He told police he didn’t get too far when the vehicle broke down.

The Nissan pickup truck was reported stolen after being last seen at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the Home Depot parking lot fronting the loading dock in Kahului.

Starting at $4.62/week.
