Conservation positions open at park, sanctuary
Kupu is looking for individuals passionate about preserving the natural environment at Haleakala National Park and Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary.
Kupu’s Conservation Leadership Development Program offers intensive entry-level experience in preparation to establishing a career within the field of conservation.
Accepted applicants will be placed within Haleakala National Park or Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary as host sites for 11 months.
The program is best suited for youths ages 17 and over. Applications are due Thursday.
At Haleakala National Park, the Endangered Wildlife Management Program works with two endangered bird species, the Hawaiian Goose and the Hawaiian Petrel.
The primary responsibility of this position is predator control to protect the park’s population of ground-nesting endangered birds, which involves hiking regularly in front country and backcountry locations to monitor traps to capture feral cats, mongooses and rats; pest control tasks; monitoring of the endangered bird populations and data management, including computer data entry and data verification.
At Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary, Kupu, in partnership with the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife, the primary focus is wetland restoration.
Other duties may include predator control, waterbird and seabird population management and habitat management.
The duration of both Maui opportunities will be from Jan. 20, 2020, through Dec. 4.
