Disabled boat towed to shore

A boat that developed engine trouble off Maliko Bay was towed to shore Thursday morning after a fire rescue crew responded to the distress call, according to the Maui Fire Department.

Paia firefighters also responded to the 6:15 a.m. call and first spotted the vessel near Pauwela Lighthouse. The boat was about a half-mile offshore and was being towed by another small vessel that was making little progress in the towing, the Fire Department reported.

Rescue firefighters launched a rescue boat from Kahului Harbor and made contact with the boat near Maliko Bay, towing the boat back to the harbor by about 9:30 a.m., the Fire Department said.

Three Maui men aboard the boat were reported to have been spearfishing in the area when they ran into engine trouble.
