New Kahului, Wailuku hotels in the works
Two separate, midpriced hotels may be coming to Central Maui in the near future, according to a recent Hawaii real estate agency study.
Anticipated to open in 2023, Wailuku Hotel has been proposed for a site on the blocks between North Market Street and Central Avenue fronting Main Street in Wailuku, commercial real estate company CBRE said.
The Honolulu-based company said it is “rumored” to be a 150-room Hilton Garden Inn property, a brand of midpriced, service hotels operating in more than 700 locations around the world. Owned by Hilton Worldwide, Garden Inn properties have two existing locations in Hawaii, one in Waikiki and the other on Kauai.
Jonathan Starr of Market & Main LLC owns four parcels that range from about half acre to 0.04 acres in the area of the proposed Wailuku Hotel, according to county and state records.
Possibly opening in 2025, a Kahului Shopping Center hotel, planned within the old shopping center property at the intersection of Puunene and Kamehameha avenues, would offer between 150 to 200 rooms and likely be affiliated with an “international brand,” CBRE said. The agency said it believes the proposed hotel will be positioned in the midpriced category offering select service amenities.
Kahului Shopping Center, a 45,400-square-foot property, is owned by Alexander & Baldwin.
County Department of Planning Director Michele McLean said Tuesday that neither project is on record with the county as of yet.
Although she has been in meetings about the Wailuku hotel, McLean said, she had not heard of the Kahului Shopping Center proposal.
The first step for the Wailuku hotel with the county, which would require changes to zoning and codes, would be applying for a variance, and that has not been done yet, McLean said.
“I have heard a lot of talk about it,” she said.
The CBRE information is from a market research study done in July, said Brett Davis, senior planner with Chris Hart & Partners.
Details were published Tuesday in a draft environmental impact statement, prepared by Chris Hart & Partners, for another Kahului hotel, the 200-room Windward Hotel planned near Costco and Kahului Airport.
That hotel would be built by California-based R.D. Olson Development and is slated to open in 2023.
