Woman rescued from side of cliff

Firefighters used a rope rescue system to raise a woman to safety after she became stranded Thursday afternoon while climbing the steep cliffside trail at Maliko Bay, according to the Maui Fire Department.

Paia and Kahului rescue firefighters responded to the 5:15 p.m. report of the woman calling for help from the cliff face on the Paia side of the bay.

Paia firefighters found the woman about 50 feet down the side of the cliff, reaching her from below along the trail and confirming she wasn’t injured, the Fire Department said. Then rescue firefighters used the rope system to bring her to safety.

The woman, who is in her 30s with no local address, said she was walking along the shoreline at the bay when the tide came in, according to the Fire Department. She decided to climb the trail to make her way back, but the terrain and footing became extremely difficult and eventually didn’t allow for movement up or back down, the Fire Department said.

Fire crews concluded the rescue at 6:20 p.m.
