Blustery weather with rough seas continues for Maui

By The Maui News 2 min read

Blustery weather with rainy pockets are continuing as the National Weather Service extended its wind advisory into today, along with notices for high surf and rough seas.

Rainy areas were recorded over a 24-hour period that ended Saturday night in West Wailuaiki, Puu Kukui and Hana Airport gauges, along with other spots around Maui.

The weather service extended its wind advisory into 6 a.m. today for portions of Maui, Molokai, Kahoolawe and Lanai, meaning that sustained winds of at least 30 mph or gusts of at least 50 mph were expected. Gusty trade winds will continue through the rest of the weekend, then gradually shift out of the southeast and trend down Monday through Tuesday, the service said.

A high surf advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Monday, where waves on east-facing shores are expected to reach 6 to 9 feet today on Maui and Molokai. Strong waves and powerful currents may make swimming dangerous, the service said.

A gale warning was also posted until 6 a.m. today for windier waters adjacent to Maui County and the Big Island, which are anticipated to see east and northeast winds of 25 to 35 knots with higher gusts and seas of 8 to 13 feet. Operating a vessel in gale conditions requires experience and properly equipped vessels, the service said. Overall, strong trade winds will persist through the state this weekend with elevated rough seas of 10 feet or greater.

Through the weekend, clouds and showers will remain windward and mountain locations, with occasional rain in the leeward areas, then dwindle through Tuesday. However, shower activity may become more widespread Tuesday through midweek, especially for the western end of the state, the service said.

For rainfall on Maui, West Wailuaiki showed the largest total of 2.24 inches over a 24-hour period that ended Saturday at 9 p.m.; Pau Kukui was second at 1.37 inches; and Hana Airport was third at 0.65. Molokai also saw its fair share of rain, with 1.04 inches recorded at Puu Alii and 0.85 inches at Kamalo.
