Kula Community Association to discuss tax proposals

The Maui News

Proposed changes to Maui County Council’s real property tax system will be among the topics at the Kula Community Association meeting Wednesday night.

The meeting will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kula Community Center. Refreshments will start at 6:30.

County Real Property Tax Administrator Marcy Martin will explain a pair of bills before the Maui County Council that would create a tiered-rate structure and potentially allow for higher property tax rates for more expensive homes. The council passed both bills on first reading on Friday.

Speakers also will include:

• Maui Electric Co. representative, who will explain how the utility copes with major storms, and how homeowners can make their own homes more resilient to damaging storms.

• Maui District Health Officer Dr. Lorrin Pang, who will present some novel ideas on protecting against rat lungworm disease.

• Simon Russell, who will describe issues that have arisen as Maui transitions from a sugar plantation to diversified agriculture. He will also examine water politics and the recruitment of young farmers with affordable housing.

• Lauren Armstrong, who will provide an update on the Maui Island Long-Range Transportation Plan.

The meeting will begin with the election of 2020 association board members.
