Two Maui women were killed when their truck missed a turn and careened off an 188-foot cliff in Haiku on Saturday night, according to Maui police.
The silver 2020 Toyota Tacoma was traveling east on Hana Highway at about 8:54 p.m. Saturday, when it failed to negotiate the curve at Maliko Gulch and traveled off the paved roadway and onto the dirt overlook.
The truck continued on the dirt overlook until it collided into and went over a dirt embankment. It then fell 188 feet off the cliff and landed on its roof, partially submerged.
The women in the truck died on the scene. Police identified them as 23-year-old Breeze Kalalau of Hana and 21-year-old Rhe-Zhene Puailihau of Kahului.
Kalalau, the driver, was wearing her seat belt, police said. Puailihau, the passenger, was not.
The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol has not been determined, as the investigation is still pending.
The two women were the 18th and 19th traffic fatalities in Maui County this year, as compared to 16 at the same time last year.
