Firetruck rammed by impaired driver

A Maui Fire Department truck sustained disabling damages to its front axle when it was struck by an impaired driver Sunday night in Napili, police said.

The firetruck was responding to an emergency call and parked on the shoulder of Lower Honoapiilani Road at about 10:15 p.m. when its passenger side was hit by a silver pickup truck driven by a 42-year-old Lahaina man, police said.

The driver, Corey Taylor, was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, inattention to driving, third-degree promoting of a dangerous drug, no vehicle insurance, reckless driving and failing to slow down or change lanes when approaching an emergency vehicle.

When Taylor appeared in Wailuku District Court on Monday afternoon, he pleaded no contest to the charges. He was sentenced to a two-day jail term, fines totaling $1,000 and $581 in fees, according to court records. Taylor was ordered to return to court Feb. 3 for a hearing to determine restitution and his license revocation period.

Mechanics were assessing the damage to the firetruck, which was assigned to the Napili Fire Station. The truck was removed from the area, police said.

Starting at $4.62/week.
