High surf hitting north, east shores of Maui, Molokai
A surf advisory was upgraded to a warning as large waves of 12 to 16 feet were anticipated to roll onto east- and north-facing shores of Maui and Molokai through midday today.
The National Weather Service extended a high-surf warning until noon today.
A large, long period north-northeast swell was building Saturday and lingering through the evening. It was expected to lower to 8 to 12 feet this afternoon.
Very strong waves and powerful longshore and rip currents will make entering the water “very hazardous,” according to the service.
Overall, gentle winds and mostly dry weather will continue through early this week. A front approaching from the northwest may produce wetter and windier weather by the end of next week.
Today’s weather forecast for Kahului is sunny, with a high near 84 degrees. Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around 65 degrees.
