Lana’i Veterans Cemetery upgrades finally finished

Lana’i Veterans Cemetery on Friday celebrated a $600,000, nearly decadelong project to improve the site with a new water system and other upgrades.
Maj. Gen. Kenneth S. Hara hailed government agencies and recognized Lanai veterans and their families during a cemetery open house to mark the project’s completion.
"The aesthetic improvements are a coordinated effort with the Department of Veterans Affairs for cemeteries to have a professional appearance to honor our veterans at their final resting place," Hara said in an announcement. "To the Maui County, Department of Public Works, Highway Division, led by Mr. John Smith and Mr. Robbie Sanches, the Lanai district supervisor, mahalo for your support during the entire project and for keeping this cemetery in such a pristine state. The cemetery upgrades along with your maintenance team's commitment to excellence serves Lanai's veterans and their ohana well."
Improvements led by Warren S. Unemori Engineering included replacing an existing water tank with a new 3,650-gallon tank, work to install a booster pump system, photovoltaic system, waterlines, a trash enclosure, architectural fence to front side of property and entry gate with new rock veneer entry pillars, an 8-foot-high chain-link fence to sides and back of property and signage, among other work.
State agencies such as Department of Defense, Accounting and General Services, along with the Office of Veterans’ Services, collaborated with the county’s Department of Public Works and the federal Department of Veterans Affairs, to finish the nine-year project.
