Man arrested for Walmart shoplifting

A Kahului man was arrested after he brandished what appeared to be a handgun as Walmart employees were trying to detain him for shoplifting Saturday evening, according to police.

Brandon Fukumoto, 32, was charged with four counts of first-degree terroristic threatening and third-degree promoting of a dangerous drug. His bail was set at $50,000.

Two loss-prevention officers and a store manager confronted Fukumoto at the exit of the Kahului store at about 6 p.m. Saturday, recovering about $125 in merchandise, police said. When the employees asked Fukumoto to go to a store office, he pulled what appeared to be a black handgun from his waistband and held it at his side, according to police.

Employees backed away, and Fukumoto fled in a 2004 black Toyota Corolla, police said.

After 11 that night, police located Fukumoto at a residence in the 300 block of Puunene Avenue in Kahului. Police reported recovering a black BB gun.
