KIHEI -- Police responded to calls Monday afternoon about a man who shot himself at Kamaole Beach Park II in Kihei.
One witness said she was sleeping on the beach when she heard a "pop." She didn't realize until later that it might've been from the incident.
Another witness, who works down the street, said he heard something going on and went down to the beach, where he saw the body of a man.
As of Monday afternoon, police were still on scene, where the victim had been covered with a tarp on the grassy area of the south end of Kamaole II.
Acting Lt. John Sang confirmed that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.
