Visitors greeted with coral reef primer at airport

New coral reef conservation displays went up last week at Kahului Airport, an effort of the nonprofit Maui Nui Marine Resource Council. The displays have been installed along the bottom edge of 12 90-inch-wide windows in the southwest concourse. Among the messages are reminders to protect Maui’s coral reefs by standing only on sand and never on coral; to keep fins and feet up while snorkeling; and to choose sunscreens that are free of reef-harming oxybenzone and octinoxate. Anne Rillero of the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council said the panels will be up for nine months and the council hopes to extend that. The project received support from the Maui County Office of Economic Development, Maui Visitors Bureau and Pacific Media Group/Hawaii Airport Advertising. Photos were donated by Drew Sulock Creations and DavidFleetham.com with graphic design by Geoff Moore of Silver Moon Maui Art & Design, located in Haiku. Printing and installation were provided by Tony Johnson of Phat Digital Design of Kahului.
