Decline in whales to be topic of talk

Jens Currie
Adam Pack

As part of the “Know Your Ocean Speaker Series,” three humpback whale researchers will present information on the factors that may be contributing to the decline in observed humpback whale sightings in Hawaii and Alaska on Tuesday.

Hosted by the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council, presentations run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at The Sphere at the Maui Ocean Center. The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited so advance reservations are recommended by visiting bit.ly/fewerwhales.

Presenters include Jens Currie, chief scientist at Pacific Whale Foundation; Adam Pack, a professor at the University of Hawaii-Hilo; and Lars Bejder, director of the Marine Mammal Research Program at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology at University of Hawaii-Manoa.

The researchers are collaborating on a project to gain an understanding of changes in the body condition of humpback whales throughout their feeding and breeding seasons. The study also includes a look at the variability in body condition of humpback whales from year to year and how that might impact the number of whales that migrate between Hawaii and Alaska.
