Ann Toring of Kahului cradles newborn daughter Marina Luna Masuda alongside Marina's father, Fred Masuda, and brother, Charlie Masuda, on Wednesday afternoon. Born at 8:51 a.m., Marina was the first baby of the new year born at Maui Memorial Medical Center, and the only one as of 3 p.m. The family had a typical New Year's Eve celebration with food and fireworks late Tuesday night, then woke up and drove to the hospital at 6 a.m. when Toring went into labor. Charlie wasn't too thrilled about having a new little sister, his father said with a laugh. But the family was happy to welcome their little girl and said they were "shocked" that Marina was the first baby of the new year. She came out 7 pounds, 7 ounces and 19 1/2 inches long, and was named after her father's sister.
