Kaohu nominated for county clerk

The Maui County Council will take up resolutions to approve a new county clerk and deputy clerk — the top elections officials in the county — at its full meeting on Feb. 7 in Council Chambers, according to a meeting agenda posted late Friday afternoon.

Kathy Kaohu, an executive aide for Council Member Tamara Paltin, will be considered for county clerk.

James G.M. Krueger, a legislative analyst with the county’s Office of Council Services, is vying to become deputy clerk.

The resolutions calling for their hires only require one vote by the full council. The meeting is set to begin at 9 a.m.

Kaohu and Krueger are seeking to fill the posts vacated by Clerk Josiah Nishita and Deputy Clerk Maggie Clark. Nishita left Friday to become Mayor Michael Victorino’s deputy managing director.

Clark also departed Friday to work in Victorino’s budget office.

In a news release late Friday afternoon, Council Chairwoman Alice Lee said that Nishita and Clark “leave big shoes to fill.”

“They have also done everything they could to make the transition for their replacements as smooth as possible, and I’m grateful to them both for that.”

Lee said there was “an exhaustive search, both externally and internally, to find the best candidates to serve in these roles for the Office of the County Clerk going forward.” After interviews with applicants, a decision was made to promote two internal candidates from within the legislative branch.

“I am confident that Kathy and James, if approved, will do themselves, the council and the entirety of Maui County proud as the new clerk and deputy clerk,” Lee said.

Office of Council Services Supervising Legislative Attorney David Raatz will serve as interim clerk beginning today until the positions are officially filled.

Refilling the posts quickly was a major focus of new council Chairwoman Lee because the Clerk’s Office runs the elections in Maui County. The primary election is scheduled for Aug. 8 and the general election, Nov. 3.

This election year will be the first with all mail-in election ballots.

Starting at $4.62/week.
